Glaswegian-born Iain Faulkner graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1996, achieving a BA (Honours) Fine Art Degree. He chose to pursue figurative painting, which offers clear qualitative measurements by which his works could be judged, rather than more subject styles of contemporary and conceptual styles. Before he was thirty, he’d sold out shows in London and New York, indicating that this was the right choice for his skills.
His works focus on characters and objects of power and strength, letting the image create a narrative in the viewer’s own mind. A distinct stillness in these images evokes inner-reflection. These powerful figures are usually contrasted with soft, contemplative settings which are accentuated through his playing with light and shadow.
